Synopsis
Marty (HAMISH LINKLATER), an anti-social realist, and Harry (MICHAEL WESTON), a passionate ideologist, are two young writers who have come to Hollywood to make it as successful screenwriters. Marty spent his early childhood growing up in Israel, whereas Harry is an American Jew from Brooklyn. Working as editors for Jewish weddings and Bar Mitzvahs during the day, Marty and Harry use their precious spare time to develop a masterpiece story that will take them to stardom in the town of “broken dreams.” Marty’s divorced parents send him checks regularly through the mail, while Harry works a second job instructing Israeli folk dancing at the local Jewish Community Center. Marty changed his name from Mordechai, reflecting on his willingness to do anything for Hollywood success. Marty also has a strong belief in honesty, contradicting his other characteristics. But when he falls in love with Allison (LAURA JORDAN), a struggling actress who he thinks is not worth acting in a porno, he tries to figure out a way to keep the girl and be honest at the same time. Harry is a third generation Holocaust survivor, which has greatly influenced his character. He believes that even the civil war in Rwanda was an anti-Semitic conspiracy. Harry has trouble dealing with change, still trying to get his conniving ex-girlfriend, Rachel (TRISTINE SKYLER) back after their two-year split. When Helga (EMILY BERGL), a gorgeous blonde walks into one of his folk dancing classes, he suddenly sees the light. As they begin a conversation, he realizes that she has an accent. Now Harry has to dig deep inside of himself and decide whether he is okay with seeing not only a shiksa, but a German one. When Chad (JIMMI SIMPSON), their health-freak, drug dealer friend arranges a meeting with one of his clients, a head honcho at Misney Studios, Marty and Harry practice the “pitch” that will surely win him over. They embark on a journey through the minds of screenwriters, giving us a window into the parallel world of an artist’s inspiration. From one comic situation to another, this journey will put to the test their beliefs, their friendship, and how much one is willing to compromise in order to succeed. We all know what they say: “You don’t choose your childhood friends, they are just there.”
