Synopsis
Pershing Island, twenty miles from the mainland, is a peaceful and lonely spot, inhabited only by the lighthouse keeper Larry and his wife Diane. On a bright and sunny day, something extraordinary is about to happen that will shatter their tranquillity forever.

Larry and Diane are oblivious to the first signs of danger. Many miles away, over the horizon, a patrolling naval jet encounters a UFO. The jet gets too close for comfort and is enveloped by a mysterious force that causes it to disintegrate in a massive explosion.

On the island, Larry and Diane hear the explosion and minutes later spot the flying saucer. It hovers motionless for a while and then begins a sinister tour around the island.

The couple allow their curiosity to get the better of them and follow the ominous silver disc to the cliffs on the other side of the island. Without warning they are surrounded by the menacing and terrifying droning from the spacecraft and powerless to resist, are carried up into the air by an unseen force. Just as suddenly, the force fades and they are thrown back to earth where their clothes burst into flames. Larry is burnt beyond recognition and his life expires. Diane survives, but suffers terrible burns and is left in a state of shock.

On the other side of the island, two skin divers, Vic and Paul, are exploring an underwater cave when they hear the noise of the saucer passing overhead. They surface and discover that the engine of their boat has been inexplicably damaged. Swimming to dry land they find the lighthouse deserted and from the top, spot Diane in the distance. They bring her back and later, after sunset, set out to explore the area in which they found her, drawn there by unearthly lights. In the dark they stumble across a large object and discover the charred remains of Larry. All his flesh and clothing have been burned away.

From nowhere the aliens appear. They are thirty-foot tall, shapeless forms of light, accompanied by the same sinister drone. Frightened out of their wits, Paul and Vic decide to attempt an escape from the island.

They carry Diane down to their boat and start to row but within a few minutes the saucer passes overhead and uses its incredible force to overturn the craft. Vic is separated from his companions and washed up on the shore of the island, he watches as the light creatures emanate beneath the saucer as it hovers over the sea. They approach Vic and in a last attempt to communicate with human beings, begin to mutate into an ever-changing series of shapes. He is too terrified to respond with anything but fear however, and after repeatedly and hopelessly firing at the aliens he falls in a dead faint. Paul tries to reach the boat again but drawn up from the water by the saucer’s formidable power and disappears from sight.

The following day, Vic and Diane are rescued. In hospital they are questioned closely by a special investigator but while Vic tells his story, Diane refuses to say anything. Paul’s drowned corpse is washed up on the beach but of the UFO, nothing is seen again.
