 | An accident on the outskirts of an ancient city causes the director of an opera troupe to lose his handbag – along with the payroll money inside. The troupe is forced to close, and for its members, a traditional way of life is changed forever.
Months later, the opera performers have found new careers. Liu Bing (Yao Lu) has borrowed money from his father-in-law to open a wedding photography studio. Sihai (Jin Hong) sells faked ‘pedigree’ dogs from a street stall. And Ma San (Li Yixiang) hopes for a big score at an ancient art as old as opera itself – Kaifeng cockfighting.
But the big changes play big havoc with their relationships. Liu Bing’s wife Xiu Ju (Ge Sang) seems the perfect mate, until he meets Ju Hua (Ren Silu), a young karaoke singer with big city dreams. Sihai’s wife Sumei (Xu Fan), the diva of the troupe, has left everyone behind, seeking work in the south. She returns one day, as silent about where she’s been as whether she’ll stay — Sihai must find a way to unlock his estranged wife’s secrets. Ma San’s wife Dahong (Xiao Xiangyu) dreams of a new life abroad, this time, maybe France… How can a humble opera singer ever hope to afford such a life?
When the bag of money reappears in the hands of a con artist (Wang Hongwei) peddling easy success and false hope, their lives are thrown into chaos once more. | |
