On the day a messenger from Pope Honorius III delivers an ultimatum to Emperor Frederick II, threatening excommunication if he does not immediately lead a crusade, Francis of Assisi arrives on the Apulian coast, returning from the battlefields of Palestine. Frederick is tormented by a profound inner conflict: obedience to the Pope would mean waging war against the Muslims, who had long been his teachers and sources of wisdom. His encounter with Francis helps the emperor look deeper within himself and find the courage to make the right decision.
