Small-town cop Franz Eberhofer enjoys his laid-back life in the Bavarian village of Niederkaltenkirchen. But his peaceful routine is turned upside down when his long-term girlfriend Susi decides to challenge her chauvinistic boss, the local mayor, in the upcoming election. Convinced she would make a far better mayor, Susi expects Franz to fully support her campaign – much to his dismay, as politics and public appearances are the last things he enjoys. As if that weren’t enough, Franz’s grandmother – the only person capable of keeping both him and his eccentric family under control – has left for a health retreat. And just when his personal life couldn’t get any more complicated, a murder rocks the village: the wealthy owner of a successful grilled fish kebab empire is found dead on the newly built golf course. Together with his longtime friend and partner, private detective Rudi Birkenberger, Franz investigates the case, which leads them deep into the rival clans running the local funfair. Along the way, they uncover a secret love affair worthy of Romeo and Juliet.
