Überblick

Sacred artifacts begin vanishing from California’s historic missions, but the thefts go unnoticed—until a masked figure dubbed “Ghost Man” gruesomely murders a man inside a mission. Detective Lucia Diaz-Levy, a disciplined investigator balancing new motherhood and the snide taunts of colleagues who call her a “Mommy cop,” is tasked with leading the high-profile, interjurisdictional case. With pressure mounting to catch the killer before he strikes again, Lucia is reluctantly paired with Dr. Kayla Lee, a rebellious, tattooed anthropologist whose expertise in cults and spiritual trauma has made her both respected and reviled. Though ideologically at odds, the two women form a tense alliance as Ghost Man’s murders grow more symbolic—and more brutal.

As Kayla and Lucia delve deeper into the case, they begin to uncover cryptic patterns: each murder is staged with stolen religious relics, pointing to the next potential target. Their investigation hits a wall after Ghost Man crucifies a gang member at another mission and blinds him, leaving behind ritualistic clues. The women struggle to connect the killings, even as it becomes clear that Ghost Man’s path is a darkly spiritual reckoning—a crusade rooted not only in vengeance but also in deeply personal trauma. As the clues mount, both women are forced to confront their own inner wounds: Kayla is plagued by flashbacks of her mother’s abduction by a cult, while Lucia battles with her devout Mayan mother, who tries to block life-saving surgery for Lucia’s ailing baby.

Ghost Man is ultimately revealed to be Cullen, a survivor of a Christian conversion camp where he was abandoned as a teen by his father. The abuse he endured there—physical, emotional, and sexual—left him psychologically shattered and consumed by the belief that violence is the only path to spiritual redemption. In his fractured mind, he believes he is a vessel of the Archangel Michael, purging the sins of others to earn his own absolution. His victims are those who wronged him, including a former lover from the camp whom he murders in a twisted blend of rage and heartbreak. As his crusade spirals, Cullen becomes both a terrifying force and a tragic figure—a broken soul wielding holy vengeance as a weapon.

The case climaxes when Cullen sets his father ablaze inside a mission chapel, believing the fire will cleanse him. With the killer’s identity now clear, Kayla and Lucia close in—but not before Ghost Man attacks Kayla in a final effort to silence her. Forced to confront the connection and vulnerability she has long denied, Kayla fights back. Lucia arrives in time to stop him, shooting Cullen in self-defense. In the aftermath, the women piece together not only the story of a boy turned monster by institutional betrayal, but the larger system that allowed it to happen. “Ghost Man” is a taut, emotionally charged thriller that explores the lasting scars of spiritual abuse—and the razor-thin line between justice, vengeance, and redemption.
