Chapter One: Rehearsal Dinner Begins

The guests trickle in and the dynamics get set up: Daniel's sulking younger brother Ben, who doesn't want to be there or be ring bearer, the nervous Stephen, the sick DJ Devbot, and the out of place birthday clown Sammie Smiles, fresh from the children's hospital. Many more guests enter, like Beth and Patrick, Lucy's mean friends from high school. Richmond slips in uninvited and is "bailed out" by Dean, who thinks he's helping a fellow guest who knows no one. Dean then proposes to his girlfriend Natalie in front of everyone, and she awkwardly says yes. Johnno suggests a champagne toast and heads to the kitchen, where it turns out Sterling has no food or drinks ready. Johnno loses it, Sterling quits and storms out, and Johnno leaves the house to find replacement food, leaving his assistant Michael in charge.

Chapter Two: Cocktail Hour

The film splits into character-driven parts, each following one person through the chaos.

Dr, Bradley Cooper. Bradley has no friends outside of Daniel and is only just holding things together with his partner Campbell, Lucy's sister, who is counting on a Cabo trip to reset their relationship. He cries to her about being friendless and learns that Chuck, whom he considered a friend, hates him. When he discovers that Justin was hired as Angela's date, he attempts to blackmail Justin into being his buddy and ends up paying him to be his friend.

Sammie Smiles. Sammie, still burned out, ends up with Sterling, who has stuck around. They take ayahuasca together and Sammie starts tripping.

Dean. Dean's proposal falls apart when Natalie drags him into a bedroom, hands back the ring, and breaks up with him. Richmond then reveals he's a private investigator hired to dig up dirt on Daniel, and he deputizes Dean. They set up an interrogation room and do it terribly. They end up forming a friend group with Stephen, playing hide and seek and forgetting the mission, while Dean tries to find a new woman to marry him and admits he misses Natalie.

Devbot. Devbot is sick the entire night and insists on playing techno, no matter what anyone wants or the mood of the room.

Johnno: The only chapter outside the house, Johnno tries several avenues to getting food for everyone, none of them successful. He eventually asks an underage girl for help, and gets labeled a pervert.

Daniel. Daniel gets advice from Bradley about being a good brother, then drinks Sterling's thermos of ayahuasca with Sammie and Ben. All four trip, and Daniel finally bonds with Ben.

Lucy. Campbell tells Lucy to test Daniel with red flag and green flag situations. The first test fails because he's too high to follow it. Lucy wanders the house, watching her perfect day turn into a mess.

Chuck & Brianna. Sent upstairs for Lucy's bridal sash, Chuck and Brianna are locked in the bathroom by Ben, who is getting back at Chuck for threatening him. Two people with a bad past bond over their unrequited loves for the bride and groom, and plan to confess their love. Chuck admits he hired Richmond to get dirt on Daniel. Michael, stressed from running the dinner, finally lets them out.

Chapter Three: The Main Course

Everyone reconvenes in the main room. Stephen has to sing (I Am the Captain Now from the "Captain Phillips musical") and does so terribly, and Dean and Richmond join in and make it worse. Johnno arrives, bruised and battered from a tough day. He gives a lengthy monologue about how he couldn't solve it, but Lucy shows him mercy and forgives him. Campbell gives a taste of a toast that is too mean. Natalie begs Dean to take her back. They get engaged again, this time for real. Sammie announces Funny Food, a nonsense business with Sterling Angela announces that Justin was hired and says she has no reason to be ashamed. Justin tells everyone they are very creepy, as they have all called him handsome all night. Lucy finally takes the mic, yells at everyone for making the night about themselves, and kicks them all out.

Lucy locks herself in the bathroom. Daniel talks his way in, confesses he's been high all night, and tells her he loves her. Lucy says she wishes they could marry without everyone else's mess, and Devbot enters, reveals he's a Catholic priest, and marries them on the spot.

The guests leave in small groups. Ben calls his parents to tell them Daniel is cool.  Stephen, Richmond, and Dean ask Natalie for ice cream, Sterling and Sammie plan the menu for Funny Food, and Beth and Patrick wonder if they're the problem, then decide everyone else is. Justin and Angela plan a book club, and Justin mentions he just made 10,000 dollars from Bradley, who admits to Campbell that Justin is coming to Cabo with them. Angela reveals she is the CEO of target. Chuck and Brianna leave together, lamenting they didn't confess their feelings, but seem content being with each other. Johnno apologizes to Michael and makes him a partner. Lucy and Daniel walk out holding hands and she asks if he wants to do it all again tomorrow.
