Überblick

Russia, early 2000s.

Sasha is a young unemployed homeless man struggling to survive. One day, he receives a strange offer: to light a green lamp in the window of an apartment rented for him every evening. He is told that the lamp is a signal for very influential people who will one day arrive and make him genuinely rich.

In reality, it is a wealthy man's cruel joke. He has devised an experiment: given easy money and freed from the daily struggle for survival, Sasha will be left waiting endlessly for something he cannot even imagine, until idleness and alcohol eventually destroy him.

At first, everything unfolds exactly as planned. No longer consumed by the struggle to survive, Sasha tries to fill the resulting emptiness with entertainment, drinking, and relationships. He watches cult films on DVD, seeks new experiences and intimacy, and tries to figure out what he wants from life. But money brings no happiness, fleeting pleasures offer no answers, and the promise of a better future gradually becomes a trap.

When one attempt after another to find himself ends in disappointment, Sasha is confronted with an inner emptiness he can no longer escape.

Then, almost by chance, a book catches his attention and awakens an unexpected curiosity. Reading opens up a world he had barely imagined before. Thoughts and questions sparked by the films he has watched and by his own experiences begin to take shape and point him in a new direction. Gradually, idle waiting gives way to a thirst for knowledge, and a vague desire to change his life becomes a concrete purpose.

Sasha finds the courage to apply to medical school. Embarking on a path that once seemed unimaginable, he eventually becomes a doctor and, ultimately, a surgeon.

Years later, fate brings him face to face with the man who once turned his life into a cruel experiment. But the time Sasha was given to wait for a promise that would never be fulfilled has led to a result his tormentor could never have foreseen.

The Green Lamp is a story about human dignity, self-education, and the search for meaning. It explores how freedom from the struggle to survive does not necessarily bring inner freedom, and how money cannot show us the way forward — yet a chance encounter with a book can change the course of an entire life.
