Lawrence Tolliver
Tolliver’s Barbershop is more than a place for haircuts—it’s a cultural institution where generations of Black men have gathered to share stories, debate ideas, and build community. Founded by Lawrence Tolliver in South Los Angeles, the shop has been a vibrant hub for conversation, mentorship, and neighborhood resilience since the 1960s. Through decades of social change, unrest, and urban decline, Tolliver and his team remained a steady presence, hosting food drives, health seminars, and offering a safe space for dialogue and healing. From the Rodney King uprising to political campaign stops, the shop has stood as a trusted voice for justice and reform. Revered by customers and community leaders alike, Tolliver’s is a living archive of Black excellence, where dignity, connection, and legacy are always on display.
