Early 18th century. Jonathan Green, a cartographer, embarks on a scientific journey from Europe to the East. Passing through Transylvania he comes to the Carpathian Mountains and gets stuck in a village lost among impassable forests. Only the will of chance and the thick fog could have brought him to this damned place. The people living here are of a sort the traveler has never seen before. They cut themselves off from the rest of the world with a deep moat, naively believing that it will protect them from evil, not realizing that it long ago settled in their souls and is simply waiting for the chance to escape. Not even in his wildest dreams had the materialist scientist thought he would here meet a faithful servant of the devil.
