Synopsis

Walter Bird is a man at the end of his tether. Living alone in a decaying home and suffocated by years of unprocessed trauma, he prepares to take his own life. But in a moment of hesitation, he reaches for his phone and calls a suicide helpline, a small, fragile act that becomes the beginning of something unexpected, and possibly his last chance to be heard.

On the other end of the line is Grace, a calm and experienced volunteer whose steady, compassionate presence cuts through Walter’s chaos. What begins as a reluctant conversation slowly evolves into a lifeline, as Grace encourages Walter to stay with her, moment by moment, through the darkest and most defining night of his life.

The past refuses to stay buried. When a volatile figure from Walter’s past forces his way back into his life, bringing with him a stranger and a sense of chaos, the encounter erupts into confrontation. In the aftermath, Walter slips into a drug-fuelled, hypnotic state where reality blurs, and the childhood trauma he has spent years suppressing returns with overwhelming force, distorting his sense of self and control.

Through carefully guided conversation, Grace begins to peel back the layers of Walter’s guarded exterior. Beneath the anger and deflection lies a truth he has never spoken aloud: a childhood shaped by abuse, neglect, and fear, followed by years of addiction and deep-rooted shame.

For the first time, Walter is forced to confront not only what happened to him, but the emotional weight he has carried in silence ever since.

Set almost entirely within one location and driven by raw, intimate performances, Amazing Grace is a psychologically intense portrait of survival. It explores the fragile space between despair and hope, and the profound impact of human connection in moments of crisis. At its core, the film asks a simple but vital question: what can happen when someone truly listens and refuses to let go?
