Sinossi

ABBY (28, athletic, and likable) wants more meaningful work and ideally overseas. She meets up with a former college roommate at a rock-climbing gym in Washington, D.C. Her friend is on the fast track at the World Bank and offers Abby a consulting assignment at APCo, a major water utility in Guatemala, to bolster her resume.

In Guatemala City, ROSA CASTILLO (30s, a spirited Mayan) writes a protest speech for her husband, the charismatic leader of the H2O movement, because of APCo’s toxic water and water shortage.

Abby arrives at Guatemala City and learns that APCo’s CEO had been murdered the night before. Abby meets with APCo’s CFO, who is impressive and committed to rooting out corporate corruption. The CFO shares some financial data that enables Abby to uncover the former CEO’s money laundering scheme at APCo.

Abby watches a peaceful H2O protest on the plaza, which turns violent when CAPTAIN ANGEL PERA arrives with his militia. When Angel goes to arrest Rosa’s husband for the murder of APCo’s CEO, the militia kills him instead, and Rosa is arrested. Mayhem breaks out.

Angel and his military regime take over control of the country.

Abby wants to get out of the city. The CFO takes her to the APCo dam. She unknowingly drinks some laced water. She wakes up in her hotel room and sees the CFO’s bloody body. Abby’s thrown into a cesspool they call a prison.

No attorney will take Abby’s case. She’s put in a cell with the grief-stricken Rosa. Rosa detests Abby, who represents everything she hates – corporations and the United States. Abby must survive prison – the squalid conditions and threats on her life. She plots an escape. Rosa forces Abby to include her, or she’ll blow the whistle.

Together, they trigger a prison riot and escape. They make their way through Guatemala’s rainforest, fleeing from a human burial pit and through the ancient Mayan waterways – all with Angel and his militia relentlessly in pursuit.

Abby and Rosa witness Angel’s order to kill the Mayan village men if they do not tell the whereabouts of Abby and Rosa. Abby and Rosa manage to rally the village women to destroy Angel. Angel’s soldiers, fed up with his atrocities, also turn on him.

Abby asks Rosa, “Terrorist or freedom fighter? Which is it going to be?” Rosa replies, “It all depends on who wins, doesn’t it?” Abby and Rosa expose the human atrocities. Rosa decides to run for office in Guatemala.

For centuries, the Mayans endured dictators who brutalized the peasants. The peasants would rise up and destroy the dictators. Time would pass.

And it all would begin again.
