Marcus Surgeons is drowning in debt and desperate. Using a dangerous occult ability, he runs a “pay-for-play” service: he allows the spirits of the dead to temporarily inhabit his body in exchange for money, information, or favors, helping them settle unfinished business. With his empathetic girlfriend Vanessa, a clinician, growing increasingly concerned, Marcus juggles clients like Manny, a refined asexual man seeking closure with his partner, and Sam, a transgender individual yearning for a physical experience they never had.
His work takes a dark turn when he takes on a pro bono case: Vesa, a murdered young girl who was once Vanessa’s client. As Marcus investigates her death, he becomes recklessly possessed by multiple spirits at once. One particularly cunning entity, Sam, exploits a loophole to seize permanent control of Marcus’s body, trapping Marcus and the other spirits inside as passive riders.
Marcus’s personality erodes as the malevolent “passenger” entity solidifies its power, using Marcus’s vessel to enact its own mysterious, grandiose plans. Vanessa, realizing the horrifying truth, must use her own esoteric knowledge and enlist the help of Marcus’s clairvoyant sister to stage a dangerous intervention. In a final confrontation, she disrupts the entity’s ritual and helps Marcus and his allied spirits fight for dominion over his own body.
In the end, Marcus is forced to shut down his dangerous practice. In a act of redemption and closure, he allows the gentle spirit Manny to take final control and reunite with his grieving partner. As Vanessa looks on, now pregnant with their child, a fragile peace is found, but the scars of their ordeal remain.
