개요

Mihail fled Bulgaria in the ‘90s after the death of his wife, raising his young daughter Roza alone, in Montreal. Far from his native culture and painful memories, he built a new life for himself, one steeped in French and contemporary art. A specialist in the field, he is commissioned by a collector to authenticate the work of an eight-year-old Bulgarian girl, Nina, whose paintings have gone viral online. Meanwhile, Roza, feeling melancholy about her relationship, temporarily moves in with him along with her son.
Mihail, however, feels unready to return to Bulgaria after twenty-eight years away. Yet his daughter’s wish to pass on her Bulgarian heritage to her Quebec-born son pushes Mihail to overcome his reluctance and set out in search of Nina.
The shock of meeting her shakes him more deeply than he could have imagined. Confronted with a disarmingly mature child who reminds him of Roza at the same age, Mihail is unsettled by this return to his roots. As his stay stretches on, he gradually comes to terms with his ghosts while trying to unravel the mystery of this child who seems to commune with the cosmos through her paintings. Is she truly the author
of her works? Has someone helped her? What gives him the right to disrupt her happy life in her village?
And if she really is gifted, what gives him the right to impose the sale of her paintings, and with it, the forced migration her mother has been dreaming of? In a delicate, suspended atmosphere somewhere between past and present, between the tangible and the symbolic, this journey, as internal as it is geographical, becomes a cathartic one. It highlights the intricate relationships between life, art, and the people who
inhabit both. Sometimes, the journey matters more than the destination.
