Sound recordist Joan Wyatt leads a solitary life in New York, maintaining a careful distance from her father Lawrence Wyatt, a once-celebrated painter and sculptor who retreated from the public eye amid a wave of public suspicion.

After a devastating fire leaves Lawrence incapacitated, Joan begins picking up mysterious audio recordings related to her mother’s disappearance years earlier. Returning home to confront the legacy she's spent her adult life avoiding, and finds the sprawling estate attended by Lydia, the family's longtime housekeeper, and her son Todd, a gardener with whom Joan quickly rekindles a connection. Also circling are Emily, a disarming nurse who has been hired to care for Lawrence, and Tom Grainger, the son of Lawrence's former dealer who has designs on the artist's final unseen works.

As she works to piece together the mystery of her mother’s final days, Joan realizes that her mother’s vanishing meshes with a larger tapestry of tragedy that has plagued the Wyatt family over the years. And the closer she gets to unearthing the truth, the more somebody else fights to keep it buried.
