Award-winning British producer and director Nigel Bellis met Walter by chance, capturing three profoundly revealing interviews. Tragically, only two months later, Walter passed away at age 99. Driven by a commitment to honor this rare legacy, Nigel dedicated two years to meticulously crafting The Red Scarf—editing, narrating, composing the score, and painstakingly sourcing archival footage to resurrect Walter’s life on screen.

In 2024 the final version of the Red Scarf is being released. A pre-completion version premiered globally through the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles, where Walter had volunteered as a docent, The title reflects the only “souvenir” of the war Walter chose to keep—a red scarf gifted by a surrendering German General who entrusted Walter with a secret so haunting it would shadow him for the rest of his life.
