O Sumário

Uganda Rise tells the powerful true story of Archbishop Janani Luwum, a Ugandan church leader whose faith and courage placed him on a collision course with one of Africa’s most feared dictators.

Born in northern Uganda and shaped by a deep commitment to faith, service, and truth, Luwum rises from humble beginnings as a teacher to become one of the nation’s most influential religious leaders. His ascent comes during a turbulent period in Uganda’s history, as the country emerges from British colonial rule and struggles with political instability, ethnic divisions, and the difficult promises of independence.

In 1971, General Idi Amin seizes power. What initially appears to some as a new beginning soon descends into authoritarian rule, as disappearances, executions, intimidation, and political violence spread throughout the country. In 1972, Amin orders the expulsion of Uganda’s Asian population, forcing thousands from their homes and businesses. As fear becomes a weapon of government, Luwum increasingly uses his position to defend the persecuted and challenge the injustices unfolding around him.

His willingness to speak out puts him under growing scrutiny. Government surveillance intensifies, church leaders are threatened, and Luwum faces mounting pressure to remain silent. Yet he refuses to abandon his principles. As Archbishop, he joins fellow bishops in confronting the regime over its violence, arbitrary arrests, disappearances, and abuses of power.

The confrontation becomes personal when security forces search Luwum’s home and the government accuses him of involvement in a conspiracy against Amin. He is publicly arrested alongside senior government officials and taken into custody. Behind the regime’s accusations lies a simpler truth: one of Uganda’s most respected voices has become too dangerous to a government built upon fear.

In February 1977, Janani Luwum is killed. The government attempts to control the story of his death, but it cannot control what his death comes to represent. The Archbishop who refused to surrender his conscience becomes a martyr whose influence reaches far beyond Uganda.

Uganda Rise is a story of dictatorship and resistance, but ultimately it is a story about the extraordinary power of one person willing to tell the truth when silence would be safer. Nearly fifty years after his death, Janani Luwum’s stand against tyranny remains a testament to courage, faith, sacrifice, and the enduring belief that even the most powerful dictator cannot silence the truth forever.
