On a remote estate, isolated young caretaker Gus looks after Henrietta, an older woman and friend of his late mother. He’s in love with her, and she manipulates him—asking him to rub lotion on her back and paint her toes. When Henrietta’s long-lost lover Teddy arrives, their romance rekindles instantly. Teddy and Gus form a brief bond, with Teddy showing him he doesn’t need love to be seen. But when Gus catches them having sex, jealousy curdles into obsession. A violent feud erupts. Teddy finds Gus’s journal full of murder fantasies and threatens to expose him. The next morning, Teddy tries to smother Gus. Gus fights back, chasing him into a surreal, overgrown version of the house. In a brutal, animalistic battle, Gus kills Teddy but is stabbed in the gut. He crawls to Henrietta and tells her he’s lonely. She says, “I’m lonely too.” He dies, and the ground gives way, dragging him into hell.
