The Body is Water

конспект

After serving time in prison, Al decides to disappear. Al leaves Texas behind and moves to a cottage on the outskirts of a small village on the west coast of Ireland. Al lives alone. He watches TV alone. He eats dinner alone. He walks along the rain-soaked beaches alone. An anomaly in this insular little town, he elicits a great deal of interest from the locals because nobody moves there—especially not an American looking to retire. After successfully leading the life of a recluse, Al is compelled to save a local woman’s dog from drowning. Lou, the dog’s owner, insists on befriending Al whether he likes it or not. And Al does not.

He doesn’t want to know that the dog’s name is Rubber or that Lou’s parents may or may not be dead. Most of all, Al doesn’t want to share anything about his own life. Undeterred, Lou chips away at Al’s stony exterior, slowly uncovering pieces of his past and introducing him to the people of the town. Not everyone falls for Al. When a nosy shopkeeper uncovers the truth about his past, Al is forced to face the shame and doubt surrounding his son’s death—something he was never going to be able to escape, no matter how far he ran.
