Sinopsis

Josh, a former Marine, breaks up with his girlfriend and moves to Los Angeles with the dream of making a fourth film in his favorite franchise, Meet the Parents. Josh meets his new roommates, Kenny and Pat, with Kenny telling Josh his family has a curse of falling from high places. Josh heads to Hollywood Blvd in costume as Greg Focker, trying to drum up buzz for his script. This proves unsuccessful as Josh has severe social anxiety.

Josh has a "meet cute" with Pam Burns, a woman who shares the name of Teri Polo's character in the Focker films. Josh meets Zach, a "manager" who has no clients. Zach encourages Josh to drive on a rideshare app to get over his anxiety. This works, but Josh is then banned from the app after terrifying a passenger by wearing a plaster Ben Stiller mask. He attends a wedding convention for inspiration, and meets Chris Vargas, an unsuspecting man from whom Josh gets a single idea from. For the rest of the film, Josh refers to Chris as his co-writer. Josh and Zach go drinking, and lie to some people that they have sold the movie as a form of "networking." They awkwardly reveal they haven't sold anything. Josh then meets Pam by chance again, and asks her on a date.

Josh flies to Chicago to ask his "frenemy" Ryan, a man obsessed with bargains, for help with Pam. Ryan gives Josh no useful advice, but they decide to do a lie detector test (in reference to the films), just like old times. This goes poorly as Ryan gets upset when Josh doesn't want to cast Ryan in his movie. Meanwhile, Zach humiliates himself in Beverly Hills by pouring Coca-Cola all over himself.

Josh returns to Los Angeles and takes Pam on a date, but abandons her when Zach calls him with intel that Stiller has been seen in several places, including a grocery store and a strip club. Josh also runs into Tim, his friend from the Marines. Josh returns home and Pat informs him that Kenny, who beat his heights curse, has died after being eaten by a shark. Zach misreads an election canvassing text from Robert De Niro and thinks they are "in talks" with him.

Josh and Zach host a table read for his script. "War of the Fockers." Ryan crashes the table read halfway through, and leaves in disgust after the script insults him. Zach apologizes for getting Josh's hopes up for De Niro. Josh and Pam go on a re-do date, where she talks about her father, "Grill Sargeant." A new roommate, Felch, moves in with Josh and Pat. He is a boisterous British man who clashes with them.

Josh meets the Grill Sargeant, who reveals he is a Hollywood power player and offers to produce Josh's film. Zach and Josh celebrate with a night on the town. Zach is later visited by the FBI, who warn them they are monitoring him. In a panic, he goes to Josh's house where he begs him to delete the footage, saying it implicates himself. When Josh refuses, Zach attempts to consume a cyanide pill and kiss Josh, failing both. He then surrenders to the FBI.

Josh then learns that Ryan, devastated that he did not get his dream job as a firefighter, has revealed a video of Josh during his time in the military, where Josh murdered an unarmed hostage. Josh is labeled a war criminal, and gets fired from the film. He goes to Chicago, where him and Ryan fight. They determine they are now enemies forever. Ryan tells Josh he pays Pam to date Josh, which she denies. Despite this, Josh breaks up with her. The film ends with Josh, his mind deteriorating, talking to imaginary versions of the Meet the Parents characters.
