A young man, Ethan, unexpectedly falls deeply in love with Diane, a confident, compassionate woman who is the same age as his mother, Margaret. Their relationship begins innocently, but when Ethan introduces Diane to his family, Margaret reacts with shocking hostility.
At first, Ethan believes his mother is simply uncomfortable with the age difference. But Margaret's anger seems too intense, too personal. She refuses to explain herself and demands that Ethan end the relationship immediately.
As Ethan and Diane grow closer, strange pieces of the past begin to surface. Old photographs disappear. Family friends avoid certain questions. Diane appears troubled whenever Margaret's name is mentioned.
