HHS (Hong Hae Seong) Theater is a cultural and artistic space founded to honor and carry on the creative spirit of a legendary Korean theater director Hong Hae-seong, a towering figure in modern Korean performing arts. Often referred to as the “Stanislavski of Korea”, Hong Hae-seong was a pioneer of modern Korean theater. He was the first Korean actor to join Tokyo’s Tsukiji Little Theater as a full-time member and went on to direct over 400 stage productions at Dongyang Theater during the Japanese colonial era. Through the arts, he offered healing and hope to both actors and audiences at a time of great national hardship. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the Seoul City Cultural Award in 1958.
Inheriting this rich artistic legacy, his granddaughter – director and filmmaker Hae Sun Hong – founded HHS Theater on June 1, 2023. More than just a performance venue, HHS Theater is a space of healing and emotional connection through art. From theater and musicals to community outreach, the venue has consistently offered free performances for underprivileged audiences, including orphans, children in foster care, and the elderly living alone. To reach even broader audiences, the theater has expanded its activities into feature film production.
What began as healing on stage now continues through the cinematic screen. HHS Theater is now expanding beyond the stage — into film production, distribution, acquisition, and screening. With a firm belief in the enduring value and depth of the arts, we continue our journey to connect people to people through creative expression.
