“Come Outside” follows Vane G and Shell, a couple with opposing views on sunlight. Vane G is a fervent believer in the sun’s healing powers, while Shell is more pragmatic and skeptical. Their dynamic is tested when a mysterious solar phenomenon shifts sunlight from blue to red light, turning those exposed into compliant, sun-worshipping zombies who repeat the phrase “Come outside.”
As the event unfolds, Vane G gradually succumbs to the sun’s influence, along with their friends Vin and Reese. Shell discovers that reflective materials and UV light can protect against and even reverse the effects. He attempts to save Vane G by confining her in a foil-lined bathroom with a UV lamp, but she resists, believing the transformation is a spiritual awakening.
Tensions escalate during a cabin trip, where Shell is captured and nearly converted. He is rescued by Maggie, a resourceful survivor, and taken to a refuge in a film studio run by a radio announcer who has been broadcasting warnings. The film ends ambiguously, with Shell entering the studio—a potential haven or another layer of control—leaving his fate and the world’s future uncertain.
The story explores themes of belief, control, relationships, and survival in a world where nature itself becomes an agent of conformity.
