In the 20 years that Tom Ramey has been sheriff of Dogwood Pass, he has had little to contend with other than petty crimes and the occasional drunken altercation. Now, a recent silver strike has brought a sudden and unexpected avalanche of people, and the relatively untroubled town is starting to resemble a thriving community. The same growth that provides valued civic improvements also attracts ruthless opportunists. Among them is New York lawyer Randall Montgomery, who has his sights set on gaining control of the entire town by any means necessary.
